The Youth Education Program is geared towards children in Junior and Senior Primary School coming from disadvantaged backgrounds as well as those who greatly struggle with their academics. Many of the participating students are currently living at the Sacred Heart Children’s Home due to unsuitable family situations, many of whom orphaned. The other children who attend the program reside in the surrounding community and have been identified by teachers as students most in need of food and care and/or academic help.
Our program aims to aide in the social, cognitive, and physical development of the students through low teacher to student ratios, engaging academic activities, and a feeding program. The Youth Education Program currently has five full-time teachers, both staff from the local community and volunteers, for 68 students in grades R-7. Each teacher works with a small group of students and focuses on daily homework, reading, math, and language skills. After eating a nutritional lunch and an educational activity, the children are then engaged in sports, team-building activities, or indoor activities such as reading, art or games. By working in small groups, we hope to create a supportive environment where students can feel comfortable expressing personal concerns with their teachers and peers. The small groups will also allow the teachers to focus on the individual needs of each child providing help and attention they otherwise would not attain. English language development is also an important piece to our day as it is vital for the students in order to graduate high school and succeed beyond. In addition to providing a safe environment for the children after school, the students will gain the skills and self-confidence important to seeing a brighter future for themselves.
